Humanity has made rapid advancements in genetic modification technologies in an effort to overcome the limitations of biology. However, these developments have led to various side effects and risks, sparking debates around bioethics. Furthermore, chemicals arising from technological progress—such as environmental hormones and radiation—can cause mutations in genetic information, leading to rare diseases and cancer.
We are now facing a reality where essential values are threatened amidst qualitative change.
I begin by defining periodic waveforms in three-dimensional structures as pure genes, and in an effort to draw closer to the premise that “existence consists of particles and waves,” I manipulate conventional forms. By twisting repetitive structures to imbue them with dynamism and generating waveforms with blended layers, I create forms that are more organic and reminiscent of nature. Yet, these structures are assembled outside of periodic norms, evoking complexity and straddling the boundary of transformation in both directions.
Through these manipulated waveforms, I aim to convey how change—pursued in the name of improvement—can become a double-edged sword, shaking the values that must remain unchanged. My work captures the process of seeking direction within this tension.
